How to apply mulch:
- Prepare the area you wish to mulch by weeding thoroughly.
- Determine how much mulch you need. Measure the length and width, then multiply to calculate the area.
- Start the farthest distance from your mulch pile and gradually fill in the area to be mulched. Use the back of a rake to spread the mulch evenly.
When should I apply mulch?
- Spring – promotes seedling growth, protects perennial and bulbs.
- Summer – prevents weed growth, cools roots, and retains soil.
- Late fall – Mulch after the first hard frost to protect roots from frost, prevent plant loss, keep plants dormant, and prevent premature blooming.
