- Provides a "finished" look to a garden or flowerbed.
- Helps control weeds. A 2-4 inch layer of mulch will reduce the germination and growth of weeds.
- Helps maintain soil moisture. Evaporation is reduced, and the need for watering can be minimized.
- Can improve soil fertility.
- Prevents damage from lawnmowers
- Keeps soil warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
- May improve soil aeration, structure, and drainage over time.
- Can inhibit certain plant diseases.
- Protects the soil from erosion.
- Reduces compaction from the impact of heavy rains.
- Keeps fruits and vegetables clean.
- Keeps feet clean, allowing access to garden even when damp.
