- Mulch around trees to improve their appearance, protect trunk from lawnmower damage, and prevent erosion.
- Mulch around shrubs to conserve water and to prevent weeds.
- Mulch improves the appearance of flowerbeds and accentuates walkways.
- If mulching around seedlings, wait until they are a few inches tall.
- Leave an inch or so around plants to keep the plants from getting too humid.
- Have the right tools: use work gloves to prevent wear on your hands. Get a large capacity wheelbarrow to save time transporting your mulch. Use a bow rake or a manure fork to spread the mulch quickly and evenly.
- One yard of mulch spread one inch thick will cover 300 square feet.
- Vary the appearance of your mulch. Use dark-colored mulch for a natural look. For a more striking look, use a bright gravel. Straw works well for gardens.
